Regulations

The 13th Early Bird is organized by American Foundation for Bulgaria and will be held in Sofia November 01-05, 2017.

Selection Criteria

The competition is open to international and Bulgarian student short films that meet the following criteria:

The film should be in one of the categories -  fiction, animation, documentary or experimental. Experimental films are only part of the representative program and do not participate in the competition program.

Тhe Director must be a student during the shooting. Having students on the rest of the film cast and crew is not a sufficient condition. A document – stamped and signed by the University, showing the student status of the applicant at the time of the shooting, is required.

The duration of each film has to be no longer than 30 minutes. The Selection Committee will be entitled to allow exceptions.

The formats that festival accepts are DVD PAL, avi, mov, mpg2 and mpg4  ( Video files in SD (Standard Definition) or HD (High Definition) - AVI - Microsoft DV codec, MOV - Apple QuickTime ProRes422 codec, MPEG-4 - H.264 file compession). Subtitles should be burned in video or in separate text file with proper timecode included. Any other format will be rejected. English subtitles for non-English films are required.

The files quality must be high enough for screening. If there is a problem with the quality, films can be disqualified from the competition.  This won`t happen without warning to the participant director.

For preliminary selection are admitted films wich are produced after January 01,  2015, have not participated in previous editions of Early Bird competitions and have clarified copyrights (especially music copyrights). Each competitor can participate with maximum two films, submitted with separate entry form.

Submission

In order to participate in the preliminary selection of Early Bird 2017 you have to fill out the submission form available on our website. Each candidate should provide a streaming link and password in Vimeo, Youtube or other. If the film becomes part of the preliminary selection, submission contact person will receive an email with personalized link to upload the following: 

  • The film with English subtitles (if the dialog is not in English)
  • Two stills from the film
  • Recent picture of the director
  • Scanned copy of a document, that proves the student status of the director
  • Poster (optional)
  • Trailer (optional)

 

After the film’s entry is made, the films cannot be withdrawn from the competition. One film is allowed to take part under one single format. Once the registration is done, no changes to the format of the film can be done. Submission implies the unconditional acceptance of all the rules and conditions in these Regulations.

The deadline is July 31, 2017.

There is no entry fee.

Preliminary selection

The selection committee will decide which films can participate in the competition and representative sections of the festival. The list of selected films will be announced on September 01, 2017.

Jury

The President of the jury is the student who won the Grand Prize Early Bird at the previous edition of the festival. This year the president is Aleksandra Terpinska from University of Silesia in Katowice (Faculty of Radio and Television), Poland, who won Early Bird 2016 for her film America. The management of the festival selects the other members of the independent international jury. The jury assigns the awards and its decision is final and indisputable.

Awards

Grand Prize Early Bird - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 1000$.
Best Bulgarian film - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 500$.
Best Foreign film - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 500$.
President of the Jury Award - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Animation - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Documentary -original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Directing - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Screenplay - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Cinematography - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.
Best Editing - original sculpture and financing of the next film project - 300$.

One film can receive more than one award. All prizes will be awarded after the final screenings of the festival. The jury members are required to keep secret their decisions till the final ceremony.

Accreditation

The directors of the selected films will be invited to attend the festival. Optionally, they can be accompanied by another member of the cast and crew, as well as by one school representative. The whole number of all representatives invited to attend the festival could be limited. The festival will cover the costs of accommodation, food and transport in Sofia. Note that the travel costs are visitor’s charge.

Media

Competitors unconditionally assign to the Festival the right to use photos or clips (less than three minutes long) from their films for press release, television coverage and internet advertisement. And to present the films with non-commercial purposes on different initiatives of American Foundation for Bulgaria.

Litigation

Early Bird Association has the right to modify this regulations, which will be promptly announced on www.earlybirdfest.org. The only decision-making authority in relation to anything not stated in the regulations is Early Bird organizing committee.

The Festival is not responsible for any cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances.

Archive

All films submitted to the competition will be kept in the archives of the competition.
